Setting a timer

Updated: May 19, 2020

Does your child consistently underestimate how long it will take him/ her to get their work done? Are they frequently staying up late to finish homework after a day of rest or consistently turning in uncompleted assignments?

One way to prevent or minimize the amount of times this happens would be to use a timer.

Ask your child to estimate how long it will take them to complete x assignment in a thorough manner. Then use an alarm and have them complete the assignment. After they finish the assignment, check to see the quality of work that they have produced and if the time expectation needs to be adjusted (increasing or decreasing the amount of time). If the timer does need to be changed, engage your child in a conversation regarding the discrepancy between their expectations and the real outcome. Work together to set more realistic goals for your child!
